Short-form video makes almost none of these demands. Comprehension of short-form video is largely automatic — the visual system is adapted to moving images, sound carries meaning without requiring decoding, and each clip is self-contained so no cross-time integration is required. Mangen et al.’s 2013 study in Reading and Writing compared comprehension and retention across print, e-ink, and screen reading conditions. Print readers showed better text retention and reported greater immersion. The practical steps below are based on what the research shows about how focused attention and reading circuits develop and are maintained.
Protect a daily reading window and treat it as non-negotiable
The minimum threshold for meaningful reading practice, based on the research, is 20–30 minutes of uninterrupted, sustained reading daily. Common Sense Media’s 2025 data, Wolf’s reading circuit research, and Uncapher and Wagner’s attention findings all converge on the importance of consistent, daily practice rather than longer but infrequent sessions. A child who reads 25 minutes every day is building and maintaining the reading circuit more effectively than a child who reads for two hours on Sunday. Make the reading window consistent and protect it from interruption — including devices.
The consistency requirement matters more than the text type. A child who reads comic books, graphic novels, or genre fiction for 25 minutes a day is doing more to maintain their reading circuit than a child who reads assigned classics for two hours on weekends. Sustained, engaged reading is the criterion. The text is secondary to the practice.
Use a physical device or e-ink reader for reading, not a backlit tablet

A child who is interested in a TikTok creator’s fashion content might engage with a book about fashion design or fashion history. A child who watches gaming content might engage with books about game design or programming. The interest bridge is often all that’s needed to convert a child who “doesn’t like reading” into one who reads that specific topic — and once engaged, the reading practice transfers.
