What Standardized Test Scores Actually Predict — Less Than You Think
SAT scores correlate with family income at r=0.42. Here's what decades of research shows standardized tests actually predict — and what matters far more for kids.
When your child’s third-grade state test comes home with a score below the “proficient” cutoff, the parental response is usually some combination of anxiety and confusion. When a high schooler’s first SAT score lands, the emotional weight parents attach to that number can be disproportionate to what the research actually says it predicts.
The test scores that dominate American educational life — SAT, ACT, state standardized assessments, NAEP, PISA — are not meaningless. They measure real things. But what they measure, how well they predict what parents actually care about, and how much weight those numbers deserve in decisions about children’s futures is much more nuanced than the education industry suggests.
Here is what the science of educational measurement actually shows — and what it means for how you think about your child’s test performance.
The Core Problem: Scores Carry More Weight Than They Deserve
Testing in American education has evolved into a system where scores function as proxies for ability, potential, and future success in ways that exceed the actual predictive validity of those scores. Parents internalize this — and make consequential decisions based on score-as-proxy thinking.
The test-optional movement at colleges and universities reflects two decades of internal admissions research showing that SAT and ACT scores, as standalone predictors, are weaker than the industry historically claimed. As of 2026, more than 80% of US four-year colleges and universities have adopted test-optional or test-free admissions policies. The University of California system made test-free permanent in 2021, following internal research showing that high school GPA alone was a better predictor of UC graduation rates than SAT scores.
This isn’t an anti-testing ideological position — it’s the conclusion reached by admissions researchers inside institutions that had every incentive to keep using scores. The data on predictive validity drove the policy.
Understanding what scores actually predict — and don’t — is the foundation for appropriate parental response to any standardized test result.

What Scores Do Predict (Honestly)
SAT and ACT scores do predict first-year college GPA — but the effect sizes are smaller than most parents assume. The correlation between SAT scores and first-year college GPA is approximately 0.35-0.45 across most large-scale studies. That’s a real relationship, but it means SAT scores explain roughly 12-20% of the variance in first-year grades. The remaining 80-88% is explained by other factors: high school GPA, study habits, social support, mental health, course difficulty relative to student preparation, and instructor quality.
Combined with high school GPA, the predictive power improves — the combination of both measures explains more of first-year GPA variance than either alone. This is why most research in college admissions concludes that high school GPA is the strongest single predictor of college academic success, and SAT/ACT provides modest additional information when combined with GPA, but little value when used alone.
State standardized tests predict something more modest: whether a child is currently meeting state-defined benchmarks for grade-level proficiency. These benchmarks are themselves arbitrary — states set them through a political process — and “below proficient” does not mean “has a learning disability” or “is behind normal development.” It means the child scored below the score the state designated as the proficiency cutoff, which in many states is set deliberately high.
What Scores Don’t Predict
This is where the research becomes most important for parents to understand.
SAT/ACT scores do not predict four-year graduation rates. In studies that control for family income and high school quality, standardized test scores show no significant independent effect on whether a student completes a four-year degree. The University of California’s internal analysis found this explicitly — one of the reasons the system went test-free.
Test scores do not predict career success at 10 years. The longitudinal research on early standardized test performance and mid-career outcomes (income, job satisfaction, professional achievement) shows weak to nonexistent relationships when family socioeconomic status is controlled. The correlation between SAT scores and adult earnings is largely a correlation between family income and adult earnings — the test is measuring the same thing the income variable already captures.
Test scores do not predict graduate school performance for most fields. GRE scores — the graduate school equivalent of the SAT — show similarly weak predictive validity for graduate school GPA and essentially no predictive validity for research productivity or career outcomes in most fields. Many graduate programs have moved to GRE-optional policies for identical reasons to undergraduate test-optional policies.
Test scores do not predict life satisfaction. There is no published research showing that childhood or adolescent standardized test performance predicts adult life satisfaction, relationship quality, physical health, or other measures of human flourishing.
The Socioeconomic Correlation: The Most Important Finding
The single most important thing parents need to know about standardized tests is this: SAT and ACT scores correlate with family income at approximately r=0.42. That is one of the strongest known correlations in educational measurement.
What this means practically: a child from a family earning $200,000/year is predicted to score, on average, substantially higher on the SAT than a child of identical intellectual ability from a family earning $45,000/year. The score difference reflects, at least in part, access to test preparation, attendance at well-resourced schools, parental education level, nutritional and physical health advantages, and lower chronic stress — not cognitive ability.
A 2019 Brookings Institution analysis went further: it found that SAT and ACT scores add essentially no predictive value for college success once family income and high school quality are controlled. The score is telling admissions officers something they could already determine from the applicant’s zip code and school name. This is the core of the research case for test-optional admissions — not that tests measure nothing, but that what they measure is already captured by other information colleges receive.
For parents: this means a child’s test score is, to a significant degree, a reflection of family circumstances rather than individual ability or potential. A below-average score from a child in a lower-income family attending an under-resourced school tells you less about that child’s intellectual capacity than about the environment they navigated. An above-average score from a child who attended $50,000/year prep school and received 60 hours of test prep tells you less than it appears to about college readiness.
The PISA Complication: What International Comparisons Do and Don’t Mean
The Programme for International Student Assessment — the OECD’s international benchmark administered to 15-year-olds across member nations — generates significant media attention every three years when results are released. US PISA scores have declined since 2012, with the 2022 results (released late 2023) showing the largest single-period decline ever recorded for any country in the PISA’s history.
That decline is real and reflects genuine disruption — primarily from the COVID pandemic years but also from longer-term trends. It’s a legitimate system-level concern.
What it isn’t: a measurement of your child. PISA tests a random sample of 15-year-olds and reports aggregate results at the national and subnational level. Your child did not take PISA. PISA does not predict individual outcomes. A US student whose country showed a 23-point average decline in math scores is not herself 23 points less mathematically capable than she would have been in 2018. The decline reflects system and context effects that matter for education policy and school design, but not for how parents should interpret an individual child’s capabilities.
What Actually Predicts Long-Term Success
If test scores are weak predictors, what does predict the outcomes parents actually care about — graduation, career success, relationship quality, life satisfaction?
The most robust long-term predictors in the literature are behavioral and contextual, not cognitive:
Self-regulation and conscientiousness. The Big Five personality trait of conscientiousness — being organized, reliable, and goal-directed — is one of the strongest predictors of academic and career outcomes across the lifespan. It predicts college GPA better than SAT scores in multiple studies. The good news for parents: conscientiousness is trainable, not fixed.
Quality of relationships and social capital. Raj Chetty’s 2023 research in Nature, tracking 72 million Americans, found that social capital — specifically, the quality and socioeconomic diversity of a child’s social connections — is one of the strongest predictors of upward economic mobility. Children who have meaningful relationships with adults and peers from higher socioeconomic backgrounds show substantially better economic outcomes. This effect is mediated by mentorship, information networks, and norm exposure — not by test performance.
Access to mentors who provide specific guidance. Children who have adults outside their immediate family — coaches, teachers, employers, community members — who provide specific guidance, advocacy, and connections show meaningfully better long-term outcomes. This is one of the strongest arguments for programs that provide mentored enrichment rather than test prep.
Executive function. The ability to plan, organize, regulate attention, and inhibit impulsive behavior predicts academic achievement from kindergarten through college — often more reliably than IQ or test scores. How to Think About State Test Scores
The standardized test results that most K-12 parents actually encounter are state assessments — the annual tests administered in grades 3-8 and high school in all public schools. Here is the appropriate framework:
A “below proficient” score means your child scored below the state’s designated cutoff for that grade level. It does not mean:
- Your child has a learning disability (though it may warrant investigation if the pattern is persistent)
- Your child is intellectually below average
- Your child is destined for academic struggle
- You should panic
A “below proficient” score does mean:
- Your child may benefit from targeted academic support in the specific domain
- The teacher or school may have information about specific skill gaps worth understanding
- It’s worth having a conversation with the teacher about what specific skills need strengthening
The most useful parent response to a concerning state test score is a conversation with the teacher asking: “What specific skills are you seeing as gaps? What can we do at home to support those specifically? Is this pattern something you’ve noticed consistently in class, or does it seem out of character?” The test score is a signal worth investigating, not a verdict worth catastrophizing.

What to Watch for Over the Next 3 Months
Month 1: If a test score is concerning, request a parent-teacher conference focused specifically on what the teacher observes daily in class. State test scores are reported months after testing — the teacher’s current observations are more actionable than test data from last spring.
Month 2: Evaluate whether your child’s academic support is targeted to specific skill gaps rather than general academic anxiety. A child who scored below proficient in reading comprehension needs a different intervention than a child who struggled with reading decoding — and different from a child who performed poorly on a test day due to anxiety but is performing well in class.

Frequently Asked Questions
My child scored in the “advanced” range. Does that mean they’re gifted?
Advanced scores on state standardized tests are a useful indicator but not a definitive identification of giftedness. State assessments are designed to measure proficiency against grade-level standards, not to identify exceptional ability. A child scoring at the ceiling of a grade-level test may be scoring at the ceiling because the test can’t measure higher — not because their ability ends there. For formal gifted identification, most school districts use additional assessments (IQ testing, above-level testing like the EXPLORE or talent search programs) that can differentiate within the above-average range.
Should I invest in SAT prep for my high schooler?
The research on test prep shows modest but real effects: well-structured preparation can raise SAT scores by 10-30 points per section on average. Given that 80%+ of colleges are test-optional, the relevant question is whether the score improvement is large enough to meaningfully change admissions outcomes at the specific schools your child is targeting — and whether the time investment in test prep has an opportunity cost relative to strengthening the application in other ways (extracurriculars, essays, coursework rigor). For most students applying to test-optional schools where their GPA puts them in the competitive range, the case for intensive test prep has weakened substantially.
My child has test anxiety that makes their scores unrepresentative. What can I do?
Test anxiety is real and measurable — it affects performance independently of actual knowledge. The interventions with strongest evidence: practice test exposure (taking multiple practice tests under timed conditions reduces anxiety through familiarity), cognitive behavioral techniques for anxiety management, and requesting extended time or testing accommodations if the anxiety is documented by a mental health professional or physician. For high-stakes tests, a child with documented test anxiety may qualify for accommodations that produce a more representative score.
How should I interpret PISA results that say US kids are “behind” internationally?
With several caveats. First, the US is an unusually diverse country, and aggregate US PISA scores average across an enormous range of school quality, family income, and educational contexts. States with strong education funding and lower poverty rates perform comparably to the highest-performing countries; states with higher poverty and lower education funding drag the average down. Second, PISA measures a specific type of applied literacy that may not capture everything educational systems are producing. Third — and most important — PISA measures system-level outcomes, not your child. Use PISA data to advocate for educational investment and equity; don’t use it to make assumptions about what your child knows.
What should I actually focus on if not test scores?
The research suggests focusing on: building consistent reading habits (reading volume is more strongly correlated with long-term literacy than any intervention), developing mathematical reasoning through puzzles and applied problems rather than rote practice alone, supporting your child in developing meaningful relationships with mentors and peers across different contexts, and building the self-regulation and conscientiousness habits that predict long-term academic success. None of these are measured on standardized tests — but all of them are supported by more robust evidence than test score optimization.
