A child says a news story they heard at school is “scary.” Rather than reassuring or dismissing: “What specifically seems scary about it?” (Clarification.) “Is that what you think will happen, or just what seems possible?” (Assumptions.) “Where did you hear about this — do you know how they knew?” (Evidence.) “What would someone who wasn’t worried about it say?” (Perspective.) “If that’s a real risk, what does it mean we should do?” (Implications.)
