She argues that the timing of this change—concentrated after 2012—suggests smartphones and social media as causal contributors, and that the magnitude of the effect, while not enormous at the individual level, is meaningful at population scale because it affects hundreds of millions of young people.

What Orben and Przybylski actually claim: Their 2019 Nature Human Behaviour paper reanalyzed three large datasets (including Monitoring the Future and the UK Millennium Cohort Study) and found that the bivariate association between digital technology use and wellbeing, while statistically significant, had an effect size (r ≈ 0.05) comparable to or smaller than factors most people consider trivially unimportant. The Displacement Hypothesis

One mechanism that researchers broadly agree on is displacement: time spent on screens is time not spent on activities that might have higher developmental value. This is different from claiming screens are directly harmful. It’s claiming they’re replacing something better.

A child spending four hours on TikTok is not spending those four hours in face-to-face social interaction, outdoor physical activity, unstructured play, or sleep—all of which have stronger evidence bases for wellbeing. The displacement hypothesis has important implications. What the Research Actually Justifies in Terms of Parental Response

Given the complexity, what can parents reasonably conclude and act on?

Justified by research:

  • Limiting passive social media scrolling for younger children (under 12) has the strongest evidentiary basis of any screen-time intervention
  • Protecting sleep from screen disruption has strong evidence—devices in bedrooms after 10 PM is a consistent predictor of sleep problems, which are consistently associated with mental health outcomes
  • Ensuring in-person social connection is present regardless of screen time—the protective factor research is robust
  • Asking “what type” of screen activity is at least as important as “how much”
  • Screening for loneliness as its own variable, not as a downstream effect of screen time

Less well-supported:

  • Broad hour-based limits without regard to activity type
  • Treating all screen time as equivalent to passive social media

  • Setting limits based on anecdote or media coverage rather than the child’s specific situation

Not supported:

  • The claim that any screen time causes harm in otherwise healthy children
  • The claim that screen time is harmless for all children regardless of context
  • The claim that limiting screens will, by itself, reduce loneliness without addressing underlying social needs

What to Watch For Over the Next 3 Months

Month 1: Audit the type more than the hours. For one week, note what specific activities your child’s screen time consists of. Passive social consumption vs. active communication vs. gaming vs. creative use tells you more than a total hour count.

Month 2: Check the protective factors explicitly. Does your child have at least one close friendship? Are they sleeping adequately? Are they physically active? Are you having regular conversations? If protective factors are in place, modest screen time concerns are genuinely less urgent. If protective factors are absent, addressing them is more impactful than any screen-time rule.

Month 3: If you’ve implemented any changes—shifted screen activity type, improved sleep hygiene, ensured some in-person social time—do a wellbeing check. Is your child less irritable? More engaged at school? Sleeping better? These are more informative outcome measures than hours-per-day figures.

Red flag at any point: If your child reports loneliness explicitly—not as a joke or a meme, but genuinely—take that seriously independent of screen time. Loneliness itself is a robust predictor of poor outcomes, and addressing it directly (How can we help you spend more time with friends? Is there a club or activity you want to try?) is more effective than adjusting device rules.
