More honest about opinion vs. fact. Interestingly, video creators often foreground opinion more clearly than text sources that dress opinion as fact. “This is just my experience” appears frequently in video content. Whether viewers actually process that framing is another question.
Where Video Search Fails (And Why It Matters)
The usability advantages come with significant information quality problems.
Engagement-optimized, not accuracy-optimized. TikTok’s algorithm surfaces what gets watched, liked, and shared. Engaging, clear, confident, and emotionally resonant content performs well — and these qualities are independent of accuracy. Month 1: Observe where your kid goes when they have a question. No need to intervene — just observe. Do they open a search bar, a video app, or an AI tool? For what kinds of questions? The pattern tells you what the information literacy conversation needs to address.
Month 2: Pick one specific claim you observe them take from a short video and have a brief conversation about it: “How would you check if that’s right?” The goal is making verification reflexive, not reflexively suspicious.
